A clean truck tells you more than a dirty one. Road grime, brake dust, and caked mud hide the exact tire problems that cause blowouts and DOT failures. That is why a fleet tire inspection right after pressure washing is the single best time to catch sidewall cracks, uneven tread wear, and low tire pressure before they sideline a vehicle. In this guide, we walk through the most common tire issues a wash reveals, how to diagnose each one step by step, and when a tire needs replacement instead of a second opinion.

Why Post-Wash Is the Best Time for a Fleet Tire Inspection

Dirt acts like camouflage. A layer of Georgia red clay or road film can fill tread grooves, mask hairline sidewall cracks, and hide puncture damage. Once a pressure wash strips that layer away, every defect is visible under natural light.

Moisture also helps. A wet tire surface reflects light differently, making shallow cuts and rubber separation easier to spot. If you wait until the truck is parked back at the yard and dry, you lose that advantage.

Center Wear

The middle of the tread is worn more than the edges. This usually means the tire has been running overinflated. Check the tire pressure post-cleaning against the manufacturer's placard on the driver door jamb. Adjust to spec, not to 'what feels firm.'

Edge Wear (Both Sides)

Both outer edges are worn while the center still has good tread. This points to chronic underinflation. Underinflated tires flex more, generate extra heat, and are a leading cause of blowouts on long interstate runs.

One-Sided Wear

Wear concentrated on one edge signals an alignment problem. A single axle that is slightly out of spec can chew through a set of steer tires in 20,000 miles. Flag the truck for an alignment check before it goes back into rotation.

Cupping or Scalloping

Walk around the truck from about six feet away. Look for obvious lean (one side sitting lower), bulges in any sidewall, or a tire that looks flatter than its partner. This 30-second check catches the big stuff fast.

Step 2: Tread Depth and Wear Pattern

Use a tread depth gauge or the penny test on each tire. Measure at the center and both edges. Federal minimum for steer tires is 4/32 of an inch. Drive and trailer tires must have at least 2/32. Record the numbers. Comparing them over time shows you which positions wear fastest and why.

Step 3: Sidewall and Bead Inspection
