Tropical systems do not have to make landfall anywhere near Atlanta to put a fleet under water. The remnants of Gulf and Atlantic storms track up through Georgia every few years, drop 4 to 8 inches of rain in a day on ground that is already saturated, and send Sweetwater Creek, Peachtree Creek, Nancy Creek, the South River and the Chattahoochee itself out of their banks. Yards in Lithia Springs, Austell, Mableton and the industrial corridors along the river have all seen water over the axles.
When the water goes down, the instinct is to get the pressure washer out and start knocking mud off. That is the wrong first move. Flood silt is not ordinary red clay, a truck that has sat in moving water has problems a wash can make worse, and the wash water you generate is contaminated. This post lays out the protocol we use after storms: what to check before any water goes on the truck, how to handle the silt, and the order of operations that gets units back on the road without creating new failures.
Flood Mud Is Not Red Clay
Everyday Georgia mud is weathered clay and sand. Flood silt is whatever the creek picked up upstream: sanitary sewer overflow, fuel and hydraulic oil from other flooded lots, pesticides from lawns, and a fine fraction of clay that settles into every cavity and dries to something close to concrete. It carries bacteria, it carries petroleum, and it smells like it.
That changes three things. Your crew needs gloves, eye protection and a plan to keep the spray out of their faces. The wash water is process wastewater with a real contaminant load, so it cannot go to a storm drain and should be contained and recovered. And the silt is abrasive in a way clay is not, so anything you scrub before rinsing will scratch.
The fine fraction is the long-term problem. It packs into brake drums, wheel ends, air tank drains, slack adjusters, the fifth wheel, battery boxes, frame rail crossmembers and the inside of the bumper. Once it dries it holds moisture against steel and starts corrosion within days in Georgia humidity.
Before Any Water Goes On: Brakes and Electrical
Walk the truck first. Note the high-water line on the tires and body; anything below that line was submerged. If the line is above the bottom of the cab door, the cab interior, the wiring harness and probably the engine air intake have been in the water, and the truck should not be started until a technician has looked at it. Do not crank a flooded engine to move it.
Below that threshold, check the brakes before the wash. Drain the air tanks and see what comes out; muddy water means the system took on silt and the air dryer and valves need service. Look through the dust shield for silt packed in the drum, or pull a wheel if you can. Silt in a drum will glaze or score the lining within a few miles. On disc-braked units, check the caliper slide pins and the pads for grit.
Electrical next. Open the battery box, the trailer nose box, and any junction box below the water line. Look for standing water, silt and green corrosion on the terminals. Unplug the seven-way and inspect the pins. A flooded connector that gets hit with a pressure wash takes on more water, so tag it for a technician rather than blasting it clean.
Check the fluids. Wheel-end hub oil that looks milky has taken water. Differential and transmission breathers under the water line let water in, so check those for milky oil too. Fuel tank vents under the line can let water into the fuel; drain the water separator before the engine runs. Photograph everything at this stage. If there is an insurance claim, these photos are the record. The same discipline that goes into a pre-wash fleet inspection on a normal day applies here, with the stakes turned up.
Order of Operations
Work top down, with one exception: knock the bulk silt off the undercarriage first, before it dries. Use volume over pressure here, 5 to 8 gallons per minute through a wide fan tip at 800 to 1,200 PSI, held back from seals, wiring and brake components. The goal is to float the silt off, not drive it in. Hot water in the 140 to 180 degree Fahrenheit range cuts the petroleum fraction and loosens dried silt faster than cold.
Then the cab and body, top down, at normal fleet pressure of 1,200 to 1,800 PSI. Apply an alkaline degreaser rather than a standard truck soap; the oily component of flood residue needs it. Dwell 60 to 120 seconds without letting it dry, then rinse thoroughly. Do not touch the truck with a brush until the silt is fully rinsed off, or the grit will scratch paint and graphics.
Wheel ends, frame rails and crossmembers get a second pass from below once the body is done. Open the frame rail drain holes if they are plugged with silt. Rinse the fifth wheel plate and regrease it; flood silt in the grease is a wear problem for both the plate and the kingpin.
Finish with a sanitizing step on anything the crew or drivers will touch: door handles, grab handles, steps, and the cab interior if it got wet. A quaternary ammonium disinfectant at label dilution is enough. Then dry the cab out aggressively with the doors open and a fan running. In Georgia humidity a closed wet cab grows mildew inside 48 hours.
Containing the Wash Water
The water coming off a flood-soaked truck carries silt, petroleum and bacteria. Under Georgia stormwater rules, wash water is process wastewater, not stormwater, and it does not belong in a storm drain in any condition, let alone this one.
For a yard wash, cover the nearest storm inlet, set a berm or a wash mat, and vacuum the water into a tank. Let the silt settle, then dispose of the water through the sanitary sewer with the utility's permission or have it hauled. The settled silt goes out as solid waste, not down a drain. A mobile contractor with reclaim equipment takes this off your plate; ask how they handle it before they show up.
Getting the Fleet Back on the Road
Triage first. Not every unit needs the full protocol. Trucks that only drove through standing water need an undercarriage rinse and a brake check. Trucks that sat in water to the hubs need everything above. Trucks that sat in water above the door sills are a shop job first and a wash job second.
Sequence the washes by what dispatch needs first, but do not let dried silt wait more than 2 or 3 days. Every day it sits is more corrosion in the wheel ends and frame, and dried silt takes roughly twice the water and time to remove. A crew of two with a hot-water unit can clear a tractor-trailer in 60 to 90 minutes under these conditions, against 30 to 45 minutes for a normal wash.
Plan a follow-up wash 2 to 3 weeks later. Silt that was missed in cavities works loose over that period and shows up as new streaks and fresh rust on the frame. The second wash catches it, and it is the right time to look again at the areas you tagged for the technician. Fleets already on a recurring fleet washing route recover fastest, because the contractor already knows the yard, the units and where the problem spots are.
