Every ready-mix truck leaves the plant with a wet drum, a loaded chute and splash on the fenders, and every load it delivers leaves a little more concrete on the outside than it started with. Left alone for a week, that splash cures into a layer that adds weight, hides the fleet number and the DOT markings, and eventually has to be chipped or acid-washed off at real cost to the paint and the steel.

This guide is about the exterior of the mixer: the drum shell, the fins and charging hopper, the discharge chute and its extensions, the rear pedestal, and the cab and fenders that catch the splash. It is not about the inside of the drum, which is a chipping job on its own. The goal is a daily routine, built for Metro Atlanta plants where humidity and summer heat speed up the cure, that keeps the buildup thin enough that it never becomes a chipping job on the outside.

Why Exterior Buildup Gets Expensive Fast

Cured concrete weighs about 150 pounds per cubic foot, and a mixer that has not been rinsed properly for a month can carry several hundred pounds of it on the drum shell, hopper, chute brackets and rear pedestal. That weight comes out of the payload and goes into the fuel bill.

The other cost is what the buildup hides. Concrete crust over the drum rollers, the hydraulic lines to the chute cylinder and the water tank plumbing covers leaks and wear that a mechanic cannot see. It obscures the fleet number, the USDOT number and the reflective tape, and a mixer that cannot show its markings at a roadside inspection has a problem no amount of paperwork solves.

Then there is the paint. Fresh concrete is strongly alkaline, around pH 12 to 13, and it etches paint and aluminum while it cures. A truck that is rinsed every day keeps its paint for years. A truck that is acid-washed every quarter to remove cured buildup loses paint, gaskets and the polished finish on the water tank and steps within a couple of seasons.

The Daily Exterior Rinse: What It Covers and How Long It Takes

The daily rinse happens at the end of the driver's last load, while the concrete is still green. Fresh concrete rinses off with plain water at garden hose pressure; the same material eight hours later needs a pressure washer, and after two days it needs chemistry. The routine takes 10 to 15 minutes per truck with a 4 gallon per minute wand and covers the drum shell from the charging hopper back, the fins and hopper throat, the main chute and every extension, the rear pedestal and the splash on the cab, fenders, steps and mud flaps.

The order matters. Start at the hopper and work back along the drum so runoff carries the loosened paste down and away, rinse the chute stowed and then swung out so the hinge pin and the mating surfaces get water, and finish with the cab and fenders. A 25 degree nozzle at 1,500 to 2,500 PSI is enough for green concrete; higher pressure drives paste into seams. Hot water is not needed for the daily rinse but helps a great deal on the weekly deep clean.

Time this against the plant's cycle schedule. A mixer that sits in the yard queue with an unrinsed chute for 40 minutes on a 95 degree Atlanta afternoon has effectively lost the daily rinse window. The cheapest fix is a rinse station at the yard entrance with a drain to the plant's reclaim system, so the driver rinses on the way in rather than after the truck is parked.

Fins, Hopper Throat and Chute Hinges

The fins at the drum mouth and the hopper throat are where paste piles up thickest, because the mix drags across them on every charge and discharge. Buildup there thickens the fins, changes how the mix folds and eventually breaks off in chunks that end up in a customer's slab. Rinse the fins from inside the hopper throat and from the top of the drum with the drum turning slowly so the whole circumference comes around.

The chute and its extensions build up at the hinge pins, the spring-loaded pivot and the lip where each extension seats. Cured paste in a hinge stops the extension from folding, and a driver who forces it bends the pin or cracks the weld. Rinse every hinge open and closed, and hit the underside of the chute, which collects splash from the ground and never gets seen. The rear pedestal, the chute swing bearing and the hydraulic cylinder rod need the same attention, and the rod should be wiped rather than blasted so the seal stays dry.

Acid-Free Options for Buildup Control

Muriatic acid (hydrochloric acid) is the traditional answer to cured concrete, and it works, but it attacks paint, polished aluminum, galvanized parts and the person holding the sprayer, and the wash water is a hazardous discharge until it is neutralized. Phosphoric acid is milder and still effective. For routine control of thin buildup there are now acid-free concrete dissolvers based on organic acids and chelating agents that soften cured paste enough to rinse it off, are safe on paint and aluminum, and produce wash water that only needs a pH check before it goes to the plant reclaim system.

The acid-free approach only works if the buildup is thin, which brings the discussion back to the daily rinse. Applied to a quarter-inch crust, an organic dissolver takes several applications; applied to a film that is two days old, one application with a 5 to 10 minute dwell followed by a pressure rinse does the job. A weekly dissolver treatment on the drum shell, hopper and chute, on top of daily rinsing, is what keeps a mixer from ever needing acid.

Wash water rules apply either way. Concrete rinse water is alkaline, carries cementitious solids and cannot enter a storm drain. Cab, Fenders and Everything the Inspector Sees

Splash from the chute and the wheels coats the fenders, the cab doors, the steps and the rear of the cab. On a front-discharge mixer the splash also reaches the windshield, the mirrors and the front lights. Rinse it daily along with the drum, or the cured splash on the doors becomes the thing a customer notices at the pour.

The compliance checklist from a cleaning point of view is short: every lamp, every reflector, every marking and the license plate visible, and the steps and grab handles clean enough that a driver can use them safely. Cured splash on a step edge is a slip hazard, and a fall from the ladder to the hopper platform is one of the more common injuries around a mixer.

Plant-Side Versus Mobile Cleaning

Plant-side washing works when the plant has a wash station with reclaim, when the mixers return to the plant at the end of every day and when there is someone whose job it is to run the station. Many Metro Atlanta operations meet two of the three. The station exists, the trucks return, but the drivers are off the clock and the station gets used only when someone has time.

Mobile cleaning fills the gap: a crew arrives at the yard on a schedule, often at the end of the day or on a weekend, works through the fleet with hot water, acid-free chemistry and its own water recovery, and leaves the trucks ready for the next day. A weekly deep clean by an on-site equipment cleaning crew on top of the drivers' daily rinse is what most fleets settle on, since it keeps buildup off the trucks without relying on unpaid driver time.
