The red and white tape along the side of a trailer is the cheapest safety device on the vehicle and the one most likely to be written up at a scale house. It costs a few dollars a foot, it has no moving parts, and it fails quietly: the strip is still there, it just stops reflecting. An inspector standing at the rear of the trailer at dusk does not care whether the tape is present. The question is whether it lights up.
In Metro Atlanta the tape has a hard life. Red clay film from construction access roads, pollen in April, bug residue in July, and a year-round humidity that speeds oxidation all sit on the film and scatter the light that is supposed to bounce back. Placards and license plates suffer the same way, and the fix is the same: a gentle, regular cleaning and an honest replacement schedule.

Where Conspicuity Tape Is Required
Federal rules under 49 CFR 393 require retroreflective sheeting, usually called conspicuity tape, on trailers over a certain width and weight rating manufactured since the mid 1990s, and on the rear of newer truck tractors. In general terms, the trailer needs alternating red and white tape along each side covering at least half the trailer length, a full-width strip across the lower rear, and white markings at the upper rear corners. The rear underride guard gets its own strip.
Compliant tape carries a DOT-C2, C3, or C4 marking printed into the film, which tells the inspector it meets the federal specification. Generic reflective tape from a hardware store does not carry the marking and will be treated as missing. When a section is replaced, use tape with the marking and keep the receipt in the unit's maintenance file.
The details of pattern and spacing are in the regulation and in the manufacturer's application sheet. What matters for washing is knowing where every strip sits on each trailer type in the fleet, because the strips are what the wash crew should be checking every visit.
Why the Film Stops Reflecting
Conspicuity tape works by returning headlight beams to their source. Older sheeting uses glass beads; the tape used on most trailers today uses microprisms cut into the film, sealed under a clear top layer. Light enters the top layer, bounces off the prism faces, and comes straight back. Anything that sits on top of that clear layer scatters or absorbs the light before it reaches the prisms.
A film of road grime does exactly that. Red clay in particular dries into a matte coating that can drop the returned light dramatically while leaving the tape looking merely dusty in daylight. Diesel soot on the rear of a trailer, kicked up from the tractor stack and the road, does the same and is harder to remove because it is oily.
Oxidation is the slower killer. Ultraviolet exposure yellows and hazes the top layer over years, and once the seal around each prism cell breaks down, moisture gets in and the cell goes dark. Georgia's humidity accelerates that, and so does aggressive washing that lifts the edge of the tape and lets water travel underneath. A strip that is peeling at the corners is usually already dead along the edge.
Cleaning Tape Without Lifting It
The goal is to remove the film without driving water under the edges or abrading the top layer. Pre-rinse the whole side of the trailer first so loose grit is gone before anything touches the tape. Apply a mild alkaline truck wash or a pH-neutral detergent diluted per the label, typically somewhere in the 1:20 to 1:40 range, and let it dwell for 30 to 60 seconds. Do not let it dry on the surface in the sun.
Rinse with a 40-degree fan nozzle, held 18 to 24 inches from the surface, at 1,000 to 1,500 PSI. Work along the strip rather than across it, and never point the fan directly at an edge or a seam between two sections. A zero-degree nozzle or a turbo nozzle will lift tape in one pass and should never be used near it. If a section needs agitation, a soft wash brush or microfiber mitt with light pressure is enough; stiff bristles scratch the top layer.
Skip the acid. The acidic first step of a two-step wash is excellent on the aluminum around the tape, but repeated acid contact hazes the clear top layer over time. If the trailer gets a two-step wash, keep the acid pass away from the tape and follow immediately with the alkaline step and a thorough rinse. Solvents such as tar remover or brake cleaner should not touch the film at all.
Placards, Plates, and the Marking Lamps
Placards follow the same logic as the tape, with one added failure mode: the holder. Flip placards and slide-in placards sit in a frame that traps grit and water. Wash the face with the same mild detergent and low-pressure rinse, then check that the placard sits square, that the correct panel is showing, and that nothing has faded to the point where the hazard class is hard to read from a distance. A placard that reads correctly at 10 feet but not at 50 is a legibility problem.
The license plate needs the plate itself clean, the plate lamp lens clear, and the mounting bracket free of mud that curls over the bottom of the numbers. Trailer plates on a rear underride guard take the worst of the road spray and are often the dirtiest surface on the vehicle.
While you are at the rear, clean the clearance and identification lamps at the top of the trailer and the reflectors alongside them. They are part of the same visual check an inspector runs, and they are the ones that get skipped because they are above head height. When to Stop Cleaning and Replace
Run a night test every quarter. Park the trailer in a dark part of the yard and stand 100 feet behind it and 100 feet to the side with a vehicle's low beams on it. Every strip should return a bright, even band. Dark patches, a dull red that looks brown, or a white section that reads gray are signs of dead cells that no amount of washing will bring back. A flashlight held at eye level works for a quick check on individual sections.
Physical signs are easier. Peeling corners, cracks across the film, bubbles under the top layer, and edges that have gone black from trapped dirt all mean that section should be cut out and replaced. Replace whole sections between seams rather than patching a few inches, so the pattern stays consistent and the new edge is sealed properly.
Tape is inexpensive. In the Atlanta market, materials to redo the sides and rear of a 53-foot dry van typically run well under a few hundred dollars, and a shop technician can apply it in an hour or two if the surface is clean and above about 50 degrees Fahrenheit. That is a small number next to a roadside citation and the inspection that comes with it.

Tape, placards, plates, and marker lamps fail slowly and get noticed suddenly.
