A skid steer or compact track loader spends its working life a few inches off the ground, and everything it pushes ends up packed into the track frames, the belly pan and the undercarriage. Around Metro Atlanta that material is mostly red clay, which dries into something close to brick and holds moisture against steel and rubber for weeks. A machine that looks fine from the operator's seat can be carrying 300 to 600 pounds of cured clay underneath.
This guide applies to wheeled skid steers and rubber-tracked compact track loaders (CTLs) alike and covers the parts of a compact loader that matter most for wear and resale value: the track system, the belly pan and the final drive motors. It also covers what a thorough cleaning turns up, because the hydraulic hose rubbing on a frame edge or the weeping drive motor seal only shows itself once the clay is off.
Why Georgia Red Clay Packs Harder Than Ordinary Dirt
Georgia red clay is a fine-grained soil with a high iron and kaolin content. Wet, it is sticky enough to cling to a vertical steel surface. Dry, it sets hard and shrinks slightly, which locks it into every gap it filled while it was soft. On a compact loader those gaps are the spaces between the bottom rollers, the inside of the track frame, the sprocket teeth and the pocket above the belly pan.
Packed clay holds water against paint, bare steel and rubber long after the machine is parked, so corrosion and rubber degradation keep going through the weekend. The grit in it is abrasive, and every rotation of the track drags it across roller flanges, sprocket teeth and track lugs.
Timing matters more than technique. Clay washed off within a day or two of wet-site work comes off with water alone. After a week of Atlanta sun it needs a shovel, a bar and hot water, and the cleaning takes three times as long.
Cleaning the Track System: Rollers, Idlers and Sprockets
Rubber tracks respond well to 2,500 to 3,500 PSI at 4 to 5 gallons per minute with a 15 or 25 degree nozzle held 12 inches or more from the rubber. A zero degree tip will cut the rubber and expose the steel cords, so keep it off the track carcass entirely. Work from the top of the frame down so loosened material falls out the bottom.
The bottom rollers and front idler are where clay causes the most trouble. Material wedged between roller flanges lifts the track off the roller and lets it walk sideways under load. Clear the flanges completely and look at the roller faces for flat spots and scoring. At the rear, the sprocket teeth need to be clean to the root. When clay fills the space between teeth, the track lugs ride high, the drive sprocket wears unevenly and the lugs tear.
Rotate the machine forward a few feet between passes so the whole track carcass comes around, and never wash a track while someone is reaching into the frame. On wheeled skid steers the equivalent job is the wheel wells and the area around the chain case, which packs with clay in the same way and holds it against the axle seals.
Belly Pan Removal and What Collects on Top of It
The belly pan is the steel plate bolted under the frame to protect the driveline and hydraulic components. On most compact loaders it is held by four to eight bolts, and some models hinge down. Clay, wood chips, wire and rebar tie ends pile up on top of the pan inside the frame where no wand can reach from outside. It is common to find 50 to 150 pounds of material sitting on a pan that has not been dropped in a season.
Drop the pan with the loader arms lowered or on the mechanical lock, the machine blocked and the engine off. Scrape and shovel the bulk out first, then wash. The material on a belly pan is soaked with hydraulic oil, diesel and grease, so the wash water has to be captured rather than left to run to the storm drain. Read the pan before you clean it. Fresh oil pooling in one corner points to a leak above it. A pan that is dented upward tells you the machine has been high-centered, and the frame welds above it deserve a look.
Drive Motor Seals and Where Not to Point the Wand
On a compact track loader each track is driven by a hydraulic motor with a planetary gearbox, and the seals at the hub are the most expensive thing clay touches. Grit ground against the seal face lets oil weep out and lets clay in, and a final drive that runs low on gear oil fails without much warning. Clean thoroughly around the hub, but keep high-pressure jets at least 18 inches from the seal lip and hit it at an angle rather than straight on.
The same rule covers hydraulic fittings, breathers, the cab pressurization filter and electrical connectors. After the hub is clean, pull the final drive level plug and check the oil. Milky oil means water intrusion, and metal flakes mean the planetary is already suffering. A weeping seal caught early is a repair in the hundreds of dollars; a seized final drive is several thousand plus the downtime.
Finish with a track tension check. Packed clay distorts the reading, so measure only after the frame is clean. Tension outside the manufacturer's sag specification wears the undercarriage faster than anything else an operator controls.
Hydraulic Hose Chafe Only Shows After a Wash
Loader arm hoses run through the arms or along the frame with clamps and grommets at each bend. Clay packs around them, holds them against sharp edges and works grit into the outer cover. You cannot see chafe on a dirty hose. Once the arms are clean, run a gloved hand along every hose from the control valve to the attachment plate couplers and look for shiny patches, exposed wire braid and kinks.
The usual trouble spots are the arm crossmember, the lower arm pivot and the auxiliary hydraulic lines feeding the quick attach plate, which flex every time the plate tilts. Compact loader systems run at 3,000 to 3,500 PSI, and a pinhole leak under that pressure is an injection injury hazard as well as a machine-down event. Mark any chafe point, add a spiral guard or reroute the hose, and log the finding against the machine's hour meter.
While the arms are clean, look at the welds around the arm pivots and the loader tower for cracks, and check that the track frame bolts have not backed out. The cleaning is the inspection. Skipping it means those problems get found by a breakdown instead of a technician.
A Cleaning Schedule That Matches How Loaders Are Used
For machines on active grading or utility work, a daily end-of-shift knockdown of the track frames with a shovel and a low-pressure rinse keeps clay from curing. A full undercarriage wash every week during the wet months, or every 50 hours, keeps rollers and sprockets clear. Drop the belly pan at every 250-hour service.
Rental yards should treat every return as a full undercarriage wash, since a clean machine is the only one you can inspect for damage before it goes back out. Before a sale or auction, a complete wash including the pan and the arm hoses is the cheapest money you will spend on the machine.
