Step 1: Pre-Wash Assessment and Cargo Residue Identification

Before you hook up a single hose, open both rear doors and inspect the trailer interior under good light. You are looking for three things: the type of residue present, the condition of the floor and sidewall coatings, and any standing water or pooled liquids that need to be pumped out first.

Residue type drives your entire approach. Protein-based residue (meat juice, dairy spills) requires alkaline degreasers. Mineral scale from produce wash water responds to acidic cleaners. General road grime and cardboard dust come off with a neutral truck wash soap diluted correctly. Misidentifying the residue means you either waste chemical or damage the substrate.

While you are inside, check for peeling floor coatings, cracked kick plates, and deteriorating door gaskets. High-pressure water will exploit every weak point. For protein and organic residue (meat, poultry, dairy, seafood), use a high-pH alkaline degreaser in the 12 to 13 pH range. Apply it at a dilution of roughly 10:1 to 20:1, depending on the manufacturer's specs. Let it dwell for three to five minutes but do not let it dry on aluminum sidewalls.

After rinsing, walk the trailer with a flashlight. Check for soap residue on sidewalls (run a finger across the surface; it should feel clean, not slippery). Inspect the floor for standing water that indicates drainage problems or low spots. Verify that door gaskets are intact and that no latch hardware was knocked out of alignment by the wash.

Now address the wastewater. Discharge cleaning trailers generate is not something you can just let run into the parking lot storm drain.
